News & Rumor...8/1 Venom on the Move...According to The Hollywood Reporter Sony is “moving forward with Venom,” a spin-off feature film about the symbiotic supervillain, who made his first big screen appearance in Spider-Man 3. But don’t necessarily expect Topher Grace, who played Eddie Brock/Venom in that film to reprise the role when the sticky symbiote gets his own tentpole—the studio isn’t sure that the star of That 70s Show and In Good Company can carry a summer blockbuster on his slender shoulders, though weren’t similar things said about Tobey Maguire before his triumphant debut as Peter Parker? Still with a fourth installment of the Spider-Man franchise slated for release in 2011, Sony, which is looking for writers to pen a rewrite on a Venom script by Jacob Estes, will have to move quickly if it wants a Venom feature to spice up the franchise in 2010. 6/10 Mcfarlane back on "Spawn" with some help...Spawn creator Todd McFarlane will return to plotting and laying out the Spawn comic series, and Image co-founder Whilce Portacio will provide the art, beginning with issue #185. Brian Holguin will co-write. 6/9 Kung-Fu takes top gross...Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda easily took the box office
crown this weekend with an estimated total of $60 million, leading a strong
field that included four films that grossed over $20 million. Overall the box
office was up more than 20% for the second week in a row as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dropped just 49% during its third weekend at the box office, earning an estimated $22.8 million and finishing third while running its cumulative to $253 million. The fourth Indy film will likely finish well over $300 million and should eventually catch and surpass Iron Man, which earned $7.5 million during its sixth weekend of release. With a cumulative of $289 million, Iron Man should make it past the $300 million barrier either next week or (more likely) the week after. 5/30 GI Joe has a new home...Hasbro, Inc. and IDW Publishing have announced an agreement,
which will allow IDW to create a new line of G.I. Joe vs. Cobra comic
books as well as publish deluxe reprints from the huge library of G.I. Joe
comics in pamphlet, trade paperback collection, or graphic novel formats. The
first fruit of this agreement will be a G.I. Joe vs. Cobra monthly comic
series, which will debut in October 2008. In 2009 IDW will produce comic and
graphic novel adaptations of the G.I. Joe live action movie, which
4/23 Sarah Conner continues...The Fox Network has ordered a second 13-episode season of the Terminator spin-off TV series, The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The potent Terminator franchise’s first foray onto the small screen averaged 10.5 million viewers in the face of strong competition and declining network TV viewers. The fourth Terminator movie, which stars Christian Bale, is slated to make its debut on May 22nd, 2009. 4/15 Kotobukiya does Iron Man...Kotobukiya has released photos of the first statue in its Marvel Studios line, a 1/6th scale figure of Iron Man from the new film starring Robert Downey Jr. and debuts on May 2nd. The 13-inch figure, which will be available in November, was inspired by the first promotional poster for the film. Sculpted by Kouei Matsumoto, the figure has been fabricated from cold cast porcelain and coated with metallic paint creating a superior rendering of the armored suit crafted by Stan Winston Studios and based on designs by Marvel artist Adi Granov. The Iron Man Fine Art Statue features multiple LED lights placed in a variety of spots including eyes, palms (Repulsor Rays), and chest (Unibeam). The figure’s base is ornamented with a sculpted Iron Man film logo superimposed on a on a three-dimensional realization of the Iron Man chest symbol, and painted in the Mark I color scheme. Each statue is individually numbered on the base as part of a Limited Edition. 4/11 X-Files Revelations...On July 8th Fox Home Video will release the two-disc X-Files Revelations DVD, a collection of eight episodes hand-picked by series creator Chris Carter, who provides an on-screen introduction to each episode in which he explains why the episode was chosen and how it relates to the second X-Files feature film, which opens July 25th. The episodes, which have all been released on previous X-Files season sets, span seasons 1-6 and include the series "Pilot," "Beyond the Sea," "The Host," "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," "Memento Mori," "The Post-Modern Prometheus," "Bad Blood," and "Milagro."
